LYRICAL COMMISSION  info@unkutrecordings.com

It’s difficult to think of another Australian Hip Hop crew who have been as active and influential as Melbourne’s Lyrical Commission. All acclaimed master craftsmen of their trade, the Commission have been honing their skills and notably contributing to the history of hip hop culture in this country for the best part of fifteen years. With a style that is idiomatic and reminiscent of New York street rap intertwined with a distinct home-grown sound, each member brings his own unique style of lyrical mastery to the table, perfectly complementing the others.

The long serving compatriots that make up L.C have all played prominent roles in the foundation and development of Hip Hop in Australia especially in its most crucial and formative years. Trem (MC/Producer), Bob Balans (MC), and Brad Strut (MC), have been involved in Australia’s most significant releases to date, ranging from a string of show stealing cameos on a multitude of local and abroad releases to Trem’s two 12”s - ‘Sheer Talent’ (1997) and ‘Amateurs’ (1998) on Unkut, and Brad Strut’s best selling LP ‘Authentic’ (Obese/Unkut 2001). Adding to the grimy beats and rhymes of the Commission is the dextrous handiwork of the high profile DJ J-Red, whose battle trophy collection includes 4th placing in the WORLD DMC Team Championship as one half of the Dirty Duo (with DJ Selekt).

Spitting raps at every opportunity, performing live and on radio as solo artists and collectively the ninties, the crew decided to officially combine talents in 1999 and set about touring with a notorious live set that secured a fan-base the country over. The “Lyrical Commission” name was created off the back of Bob Balans’ solo track on the Nuff Said compilation, ‘Rock Da City’ with the name depicting everything the crew were all about- the LYRICS! Straight up, true, complex street styles inspired by the greats- Rakim, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, and Lord Finesse.

After earning critical acclaim and recognition for their contribution to the ‘Trojan Warrior’ movie soundtrack (which saw them working alongside notorious stand-over man Mark ‘Chopper’ Read) and countless guest appearances, L.C made plans to get official product out on the streets. The recording for their debut release commenced in early 2002, and ‘The Stage Is Set…’ dropped in Dec 02. It received excellent reviews, international acclaim, consolidated Lyrical Commission’s burgeoning fan base and set a precedent amongst the Australian hip-hop underground. No other local release at that time had created such a street buzz and with little more than hand to hand distribution,
‘Stage is Set…’ did incredibly well.

Lyrical Commission have toured extensively, performing alongside international and home-grown heavyweights such as The Roots, The Liks, Swollen Members, A-Trak, Aceyalone, Foreign Legion, People Under The Stairs, Kool Keith, Celph Titled & Apathy (Demigodz) and Hilltop Hoods. They have also headlined numerous shows from Underground hip-hop gigs to major music events including DMC Finals, and Melbourne’s Livid Festival.

Since their debut, Lyrical Commission have worked tirelessly in the studio and vocal booth, refining and perfecting their style and recording new material (including tracks with NY underground legend Q-Unique and Celph Titled), and are now armed and ready to unleash a barrage of new product this year.

2005 is guaranteed to be their year with L.C releasing the ‘Murderous Metaphors E.P’ on July 11, Brad Strut’s sophomore solo LP, Trem’s debut LP and a Lyrical Commission DVD/ mixtape due out towards the end of the year.
